Stories at the Old Schoolhouse: I am Birch

August 14 @ 10:30 AM - 11:30 PM

Free

Spend an hour at Old York, hearing a story that highlights New England history and culture. Afterwards, enjoy a related activity or take a peek inside Old York’s one-room schoolhouse.

This week, we are reading I Am Birch by Scott Kelley. A birch tree is an unlikely champion and protector of the forest in a story inspired by the legends of the Wabanaki tribes of Maine. As rumors of coming cold and darkness spread through the woods, chaos and fear grow, and animals begin to panic. The birch, however, is firmly rooted and gently helps to put the animals’ fears to rest. Following the story, we’ll have visit from our friends at White Pine Programs to learn about trees and creatures of the forest.
