Stories at the Old Schoolhouse: Independence Cake
July 3 @ 10:30 AM - 11:30 AM
FREESpend an hour at Old York, hear a story, and afterwards enjoy a related activity, or take a peek inside the York Corner Schoolhouse. The program features books that bring history alive, and teach children about life in New England.
This week we’re reading Independence Cake, by Deborah Hopkinson. Celebrate American independence with a story inspired by the childhood of Amelia Simmons, author of the first American cook book, published in 1796. Travel to Revolutionary America and meet the amazing Amelia Simmons—mother’s helper and baker of delectable cakes! Afterwards, visit historic Jefferds Tavern to sign the Declaration of Independence, and enjoy a taste of Independence cake.
